Introduction for Lecturers New to Teaching in Higher Education

UKOER Course Pack

Abstract

This OER is drawn from a two-day induction course given by the Staff Development Centre for new lecturers at the University of Leicester. It incorporates ten sessions covering such subjects as effective large-group teaching and the use of VLEs in Higher Education. There are nine tasks to be completed by the participants, two of which involve additional handouts.

This programme has been produced as two OER versions:

  • The Ready-to-use version - available as unsecured, printable PDF files - is non-institutionally specific and can be used 'as is' to deliver a comprehensive, introductory workshop for anyone new to teaching in Higher Education.
  • The Repurposable version  - available as RTF and Word 97 files - has been tagged so that a user can amend some of the content to make it institutionally specific, for example by inserting the name of the VLE in use at the institution. The tags follow the format [NAME OF INSTITUTION] and can be found with a simple search for square brackets [.

Further OER versions, for example Power Point slides, will be made available in due course.

The ten sessions of this programme are:

    • Session One: Starting teaching: hopes and fears
    • Session Two: ‘Perceptions of Teaching’ exercise
    • Session Three: Teaching in Practice 1: ingredients of effective large-group teaching
    • Session Four: Teaching, academic practice and your career
    • Session Five: Teaching in Practice 2: ingredients of effective on-line teaching
    • Session Six: Teaching in Practice 3: ingredients of effective small-group teaching
    • Session Seven: Student learning
    • Session Eight: Planning teaching sessions
    • Session Nine: The local context
    • Session Ten: Professional practice: addressing diversity
