    <title>The Leicester Migration Series: Events</title>

    <description>The Leicester Migration Series is a collaboration between the College of Arts, Humanities and Law and the Leicester Migration Network. As part of the College's Research Wednesday seminar series, five sessions will be devoted to current research being carried out within the university on the topic of migration. Each session will be held in Attenborough LR111, from 1-2pm.</description>
    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>The aim is to highlight innovative and cross-disciplinary migration-related projects within CAHL as well as, under the auspices of the Migration Network, to promote migration as a valuable topic for interdisciplinary contact and collaboration across university and the city of Leicester. The talks will be aimed at a broad audience and will focus as much on the nature and praxis of carrying out migration research, as on the details of the specific project. Each session will involve a discussant, as well as an opportunity for further dialogue.</p>

    <description>Young people in Leicester explored their experiences of multiculturalism and its challenges at a University of Leicester social sciences event.

‘Our Leicester’: Understanding a Multicultural City featured a series of workshops and an instant survey. The participating young people put together a Youth Manifesto for a successful multicultural city that was presented to the deputy city mayor, councillor Rory Palmer.</description>
    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>The event&nbsp;included around&nbsp;100 young people from local sixth-form colleges which are part of the Realising Opportunities network for widening participation.</p>
<p>The event was organised by Dr Marc Scully, a Research Associate on the University’s Impact of Diasporas on the Making of Britain programme, along with Dr Leah Bassel and John Williams of the University’s Department of Sociology.</p>
<p>Workshops included: Addressing Hate Crime; Racism &amp; Prejudice in Sport; the 2011 Riots; Welcoming New Communities; and Faith &amp; Identity in the City.</p>

<p>This event, funded by East Midlands Strategic Health Authority, is planned to mark national Refugee week and is being organised by the clinical psychology department at the University of Leicester in conjunction with a range of refugee and voluntary sector organisations across the East Midlands. This one day conference will be held at the University of Leicester on 19th June 2012. The theme is Hope and Resilience in the refugee context and it will explore how hope and resilience can be fostered in the current climate through an emphasis on human rights, approaches to justice in psychological therapy, and through building solidarity in the voluntary and statutory sector.</p>

They were forced to leave almost everything in Uganda and seek refuge in other countries such as Britain and Canada.</p>
<p>Using original film, personal testimony and some rare artefacts borrowed from Leicester’s Ugandan Asian community, the exhibition tells a powerful and important story.</p>

    <description>The 5-9th March saw a success week of events around Refugee Awareness.</description>
    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>The University of Leicester’s first <span class="highlightedSearchTerm">Refugee</span> <span class="highlightedSearchTerm">Week</span>, organised entirely by students, aimed to give a voice to <span class="highlightedSearchTerm">refugee</span>s in Leicester and promote the human rights of asylum seekers detained after entering the UK.</p>
<p>The <span class="highlightedSearchTerm">week</span>, which ran from March 5 to 9, was funded by the United Nations society and featured a series of events and activities on campus to raise money for asylum seeker charity City of Sanctuary.</p>
<p>There was be a film screening of Canadian drama Incendies, which depicts the plight of a family who escape their war-torn birth land in the Middle East.</p>
<p>A Zimbabwean choir performed, followed by testimonials from Leicester <span class="highlightedSearchTerm">refugee</span>s.</p>
<p>A panel of asylum seekers, academics and charity workers debated “<span class="highlightedSearchTerm">Refugee</span>s and Human Rights”.</p>
