Translational Themes
The translational themes for the Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (LCBRU) will be based on our basic research strengths in three areas:
- Cardiovascular genetics
Using a genome-wide association approach, we have contributed to the discovery and validation of nine novel loci that affect risk of CAD and/or premature MI. - Hypertension and vascular damage
We were the first to demonstrate that non-invasively derived central aortic pressure is more predictive of cardiovascular outcome than conventional brachial blood pressure measurement. - Novel cardiovascular therapeutic interventions
We were one of the first groups to provide proof of principle for the local delivery of therapeutic agents using vascular stents.
