Course Overview

This two-day career development workshop for research staff, run jointly by the University of Leicester and De Montfort University, aims to give researchers the tools needed to manage their own careers. You will be introduced to contemporary debates on career management and employability, be able to assess and appreciate your transferable skills, explore opportunities for researchers, and take part in practical activities to move your career in the right direction.

 09:00 - 16:30 hrs  (both days)

What can I expect to cover? 

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • how to manage your career
  • improving your employability
  • finding a career that fits you
  • understanding opportunities for researchers
  • making an impact in applications and interviews 
What will I get out of this course?  

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • recognise career management strategies and assess their effectiveness for you
  • build knowledge of current thinking on employability
  • compare academic and non-academic professional opportunities for researchers
  • articulate your skills, values and motivation in relation to your current and future career
  • develop approaches for success in written applications and interviews.  
Who is it for?

Research staff – research associates, research assistants, postdoctoral researchers, research fellows and other staff groups employed to carry out research. 

Participant preparation needed?

Participants will be required to complete a short pre-course questionnaire.

David Ross (DMU) is a careers employability consultant and business advisor to creative start-up companies. Naomi Irvine (UoL) leads the creation and delivery of professional development for research staff at the University of Leicester.

Places available

Places available 9 places will be available to University of Leicester staff. There will be a minimum of 6 participants from De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.
