Course Overview

The ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Award in Team Leading gives practising or potential team leaders the foundation for their formal development in this role.  It is an ideal programme for those in their first position as a team leader/supervisor.

Date(s)

A programme consisting of 4 separate days:

Day 1  - Wed 18 January 2012  (Half day)
Day 2  - Wed 25 January 2012  (Full day)
Day 3  - Wed 8 February 2012  (Full day)
Day 4  - Wed 22 February 2012  (Full day)

Times

(Total duration 3½ Days)
Half day:  9.30am - 12.30pm, and
Full day:   9.30am - 4.30pm

What can I expect to cover? 

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the programme candidates will:

  • Understand the roles, functions and responsibilities of the team leader and the limits of his/her authority and accountability
  • Know how to seek, accept and respond positively to feedback on personal performance to improve workplace performance
  • Understand the organisation's requirements in relation to individual performance
  • Understand how to address underperformance
  • Understand what motivates people
  • Understand the communication process
  • Understand methods of communication
What will I get out of this course? 

An understanding of how to lead a team effectively including some practical techniques which can be used in their day to day team leading activities.

Who is it for?

University of Leicester staff who are currently leading a small team or who hope to do so in the future.

Participant preparation needed?

None.

Additional Information

Candidates will be expected to do some work between workshops and to achieve the Award must complete three assessed pieces of work.
Candidates who wish to achieve the Award will be registered with the ILM as studying members and will have free ILM membership for one year. 
There is no charge for University of Leicester staff to complete this programme.  However where candidates register for the Award but do not complete it their department will be charged an amount equivalent to the registration fee, currently £73.00.   

This skills workshop forms part of the Leadership at Leicester framework.

What prior experience do I need?

Candidates should be, or be aspiring to be, a team leader.

Formal assessment

To achieve the Award candidates must:

  • Attend all the workshops
  • Complete the independent work between workshops
  • Complete three assessed pieces of written work

Candidates may attend without completing the assessed work but they will not be able to claim the ILM Award.  If candidates wish to attend the course only then this must be made clear to the tutor at the first workshop.
