Course Overview

The ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Award in First Line Management is a four day blended learning programme which will give candidates an excellent basis for their formal learning around leadership and management.

A programme consisting of 4 separate days:

Day 1  -  Wed 1 February 2012 
Day 2  -  Wed 29 February 2012 
Day 3  -  Wed 28 March 2012 
Day 4  -  Wed 25 April 2012
    

Times

Duration 7 hours each Workshop - 9.30am - 4.30pm

What can I expect to cover? 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the Programme candidates will be able to:

  • Describe a problem, its nature, scope and impact
  • Gather and interpret information to identify possible solutions to a problem
  • Summarise and evaluate options and reach a decision
  • Plan and implement the communication of a decision
  • Explain training appropriate to the workplace
  • Explain the coaching need and how to plan the coaching for a member of their team
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of learning in the workplace
  • Explain how to develop and maintain trust at work
  • Describe the stages of group formation
  • Explain how a manager could benefit from knowing team member’s preferred roles
What will I get out of this course? 

Candidates will explore how they can apply the knowledge gained from the programme in their day to day work as a first line manager.

Who is it for?

For University of Leicester staff who are in, or aspire to be in, a first line management position whether in an academic or support staff role.

Participant preparation needed?

Prior to attending this workshop you are encouraged to work through the on-line resource ‘Introduction to Leadership’ and compile your Personal Development Plan.

Additional Information

In addition to attending the four workshops, candidates will be required to undertake independent working between the workshops, some of which may be on-line, and to submit three pieces of work which will be assessed.

Candidates who wish to achieve the Award will be registered with the ILM as studying members and will have free ILM membership for one year. 

There is no charge for University of Leicester staff to complete this programme.  However where candidates register for the Award but do not complete it their department will be charged an amount equivalent to the registration fee, currently £75.00. 

This skills workshp forms part of the Leadership at Leicester framework.

What prior experience do I need?

Ideally candidates should have some experience of supervising or managing others. 

Formal assessment

To obtain the Award candidates must:

  • Attend all four workshops
  • Carry out any independent working (including on-line working)
  • Submit three pieces of written work each of between 1000 and 2000 words.

Candidates may attend without completing the assessed work but they will not be able to claim the ILM Award.  If candidates wish to attend the course only then this must be made clear to the tutor at the first workshop.
