Course description

Course Overview

This course provides an introduction to some core issues in research ethics for departmental ethics officers. As such there is a focus on informed consent, research involving vulnerable participants and confidentiality among other issues. It will operate in an interactive fashion, driven by the discussion of appropriate case studies.

(This course forms part of the Skills for the Professional Researcher Programme).

What can I expect to cover? 
  • Explore the general ethical principles underpinning research and the research governance context (non-NHS)
  • Understand some of the key ethical issues that need exploring, such as informed consent, confidentiality and privacy
  • Understand the University of Leicester’s ethics approval guidelines and processes
What will I get out of this course? 
  • An appreciation of the kinds of ethical issues that arise in research conducted in the higher education sector;
  • An ability to identify and analyse a range of the ethical issues which University based research face on a regular basis.
Who is it for?

Departmental research ethics officers and supervisors of doctoral candidates.
