Information Security Awareness training for staff

Online training and briefing sessions on information security are provided for all staff. The online course is compulsory for all staff and lasts 45 minutes with an additional 15 minute module for research staff. The online training is accessible through the Blackboard VLE system and is now being made available to staff on a staged basis to prevent overloading the system.  You will receive an email from Information Assurance Services inviting you to complete the course and a link to the Blackboard VLE system.

For all staff, the online training will cover:

  • Why we need to protect information
  • Physical security and good practice
  • Accessing and sharing information
  • Threats and protection
  • Working away from your desk
  • Your responsibilities 

For researchers, an additional 15 minute online training module will cover: 

  • Why we need to protect research information
  • Collecting and handling data securely
  • Data integrity
  • Data protection and Freedom of Information

Briefing sessions

  1. New staff (excluding HODs and researchers) - 1.5 hours
  2. Researchers - 1.5 hours
  3. Heads of Departments - 1 hour
  4. Information Assurance Co-ordinators - 3.5 hours

Supervisors of staff members who do not have access to a computer during the course of their work will be required to arrange face to face briefings for their staff to cover the necessary material.
