Martin is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist who as previously worked across a range of sectors, ranging from University lecturing, through consultancy to delivering experiential training. Having begun his career as a research scientist for the Transport Research Laboratory, he subsequently worked as a Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University and later as a psychometric test developer for the National Foundation for Educational Research. Whilst in this latter role he was involved in the development of the initial UK driver theory test for cars and led the development of the corresponding driver theory tests for buses and large goods vehicles.

Subsequently Martin has worked in academia, as a Research Fellow with the Open University and as a Lecturer at the University of Leicester. He has also worked as a Consultant Occupational Psychologist with Capita, where he oversaw the implementation of the Civil Service Selection Board, and more recently in the delivery of outdoor experiential training. He has also run a private practise for seven years. He believed this range of experience is well suited to providing career management guidance to PGRs here at the University.
