Finding Part-Time Work
Where to Look
There are several sources of information you can use if you want to look for a part-time job. For further information, please see the Careers Service websitewhich has a list of places to look and sources of information.
Employment Agencies
In some countries you may not be used to the idea of 'employment agencies'. These work by finding jobs for people in different areas of work. The agencies fill vacancies usually for casual work on behalf of a business who works with them. They will often pay your wages directly, rather than the business as they take a part of your wage to pay their agency fees. Pay for the same job can vary between agencies, so be aware of this.
There is an employment agency in the Students' Union Building called 'Workbank', who specialise in finding part-time work and full-time vacation work for students. You will need to register with them before they can find you any work. This can be done via their website: http://www.theworkbank.co.uk/
There are also a lot of other job agencies in the city centre. Some of them cater for specific markets e.g. administration work or manual work. Some of these agencies may require some kind of previous experience in these areas. Visit the Careers Service for more details of the various employment agencies in Leicester. Alternatively, you can search the local listings here, which also gives the areas of the type of work they specialise in. It is a good idea to register with many agencies, as then you will have more chance in finding work. University holidays are a difficult time to find work, as these are the times when everyone is searching for a job, so remember to plan early and register before the end of term. You should make sure that an agency knows you are only allowed to work up to a maximum of 20 hours a week during term-time if you are on a Degree or Foundation programme, or 10 hours if you are an ELTU student (see Permission to Work).
Jobs on campus
Some students find jobs on campus working for the Students' Union or University Services. For information on job vacancies see the University home-pageand view 'Money and Jobs'.
The Careers Service and other University Departments may also have job advertisements - check around campus and go to different offices to ask if there are jobs available.
