Increase your income
How Can Students Increase Their Income?
Bank
Most major banks offer full-time university students a special ‘student bank account’. See our section on Banking.
Work
It is very common for students to work to supplement their income – either fitting around academic commitments during term-time and/or during the vacations.
If you are likely to need a job it s sensible to explore options in advance:
- Do you have a job already? Can you remain with the same employer and transfer to a Leicester location? Will they keep your job open during the holidays?
- Make sure your CV is up-to-date
- Contact the University’s Career Service for advice
- Ask for a written reference from current/previous employer
- Investigate Leicester job opportunities:
- University of Leicester Jobsonline
- Leicester Mercury
- the Workbank
- Contact major employers (high street retailers/restaurants/bars etc.) to enquire about student job opportunities
Tax rebate
If you earn less than your taxable allowance you can apply for a tax rebate. Visit the HMRC student website to see how.
Savings
- If you already have a job try and put some money aside
- Consider asking for money for birthdays etc.
University Hardship Funds
The University administers a hardship fund called the Access to Learning Fund Applications are restricted to Home (UK) students. In exceptional circumstances, students who do not qualify for assitance from this fund may be considered for support from other discretionery funds. Contact us for individual advice
Family
Discuss your budget plan with your family. Are they able to help at all, even just with the occasional food parcel if there’s not much spare cash?
Sell stuff!
- Sell old text books at Willingales second hand book shop on campus
- Sell things you no longer need/want – try online or local newspapers’ classifieds ads (some advertise for free)
