About Us

The Student Welfare Service is located in the Percy Gee Building and provides a practical service designed to meet the needs of all students, including prospective students.

Welfare Officers offer both general and specialist advice on a wide range of issues including finance, immigration,  housing, leaving care, childcare and benefits; we also:

  • administer applications for Hardship Funds on behalf of the University;
  • provide a visa renewal service;
  • organise international student welcome events;
  • work closely with the Police, local Councillors, and the Students' Union to ensure that students are safe and secure, and that they appreciate the responsibilities of living in the community.

The Student Welfare Service is often central to co-ordinating the University's response to accident, serious illness or trauma involving students.

There are many ways you can access the information, advice and guidance at the Student Welfare Service.  We offer:

  • Appointments
  • Telephone and e-mail consultations

  • Paper-based resources
