About the service and what we offer

You may be wondering what counselling will be like, especially if you have not been to a counselling service before. Coming to talk to a stranger may feel awkward at first, but this usually gets easier.

Students come to see us for a variety of reasons: some just want to come to see us once, to talk over something that is troubling them, but this may be resolved quite quickly. Others may want to see a counsellor regularly for a period of time.

A counsellor will endeavour to help you focus on and understand more clearly the issues which concern you, and aims to work with you towards making choices or changes which are right for you. This is a free service.

The counsellors also offer advice and guidance to staff who are concerned about individual students.

Although we make every effort to provide a first appointment within 5 working days, there are times when the Student Counselling Service is so busy that this is not possible.

We operate a waiting list for first appointments -  register with the counselling service for an appointment. We will need your mobile telephone number and as soon as your name comes to the top of the list we will ring you.

In order to allocate appointments quickly, we will not be able to leave a message, so please ensure your mobile is switched on. We hope to be able to ring you within a week.
