How are students screened and assessed at Leicester?
A description of the dyslexia assessment process for students who think they might be dyslexic
Students will often self refer to the AccessAbility Centre or they may be advised by a tutor to come to the AccessAbility Centre. Usually something has alerted the student or tutor to a possible problem following some form of assessment. For more information on spotting dyslexia, please refer to the 'spotters guide'.
A student who asks to be be screened for dyslexia will be taken through the following process:
Step 1 - An interview with a Study Adviser about current issues, past educational experiences and learning styles
Step 2 - A screening using the Dyslexia Adult Screening Test. This will give an indication of an underlying Specific Learning Difficulty of the dyslexic type.
Step 3 - Referral to the Student Learning Centre or an Educational Psychologist or other partner in the university such as Counselling or Student Support Co-ordinator, (well being).
Once a student has a report which confirms Dyslexia the AccessAbility Centre can assist students with:
- Accessing the Disabled Students' Allowance - please see section on Disabled Students' Allowance
- Arranging adjustments for exams - please see section on Exam Arrangements
- Specialist dyslexia support in achieving their potential - please see section on Study Advice
Please note that the AccessAbility Centre does not proof read and cannot provide subject specific support for students. Many students will have a recommendation in their report for support from their department.
