Visa Checkpoint for International (non-EU) students
Who needs to attend the Visa Checkpoint
All new and returning international (non-EU) students must complete the Visa Checkpoint at the start of each academic year of study.
To complete the Visa Checkpoint you must provide evidence that you have a valid visa to study at the University of Leicester. If you are a new student you will need to do this before you will be able to start your studies with us. If you are a returning student then you will need to do this every year to retain your registered status.
What happens at the Visa Checkpoint
We will check and copy your visa and passport, update your record and return the documents to you immediately. To complete the Visa Checkpoint you must provide evidence that you have a valid visa to study at the University of Leicester. If you do not have a valid visa to study you will not be able to register and we will refer you to the Student Welfare Service. They will assist you wherever possible to apply for a visa before the latest registration date.
Once you complete the Visa Checkpoint you will receive your University of Leicester card and a letter confirming that you are registered with us.
What to bring with you to the Visa Checkpoint
- Bring your current passport and visa (proof that you are entitled to study with us). You must bring your original documents as copies will not be accepted. For many students this will be a Tier 4 Student visa, which will be a sticker in your passport if you applied from outside the UK, or a Biometric Residence Permit if you applied from within the UK.
If you do not have these documents because you have made a new visa application you must provide evidence of your application in order to register.
If you are a new student you will also need to bring your offer letter or other correspondence you have received from us with your nine digit student number on it. Returning students must bring their ID cards.
Go to our valid visa pages to find out which visas are valid and what evidence you must provide to complete the Visa Checkpoint.
When and where to attend the Visa Checkpoint
If you are attending the International Students Welcome Programe you will be issued with an appointment time when you register. If you are not attending, you will be sent an email notifying you when and where to attend a visa checkpoint.
Your department will advise you when to attend the visa checkpoint once you have arrived and completed your Departmental Induction.
Visa checkpoint deadline
You must complete the visa checkpoint by the deadline notified to you in the registration emails which will be sent to the email address provided in your application.
If you do not complete the checkpoint by this time you will not be permitted to commence or continue your studies. If you are a new student you will need to defer commencement of your course until the next intake by contacting email@example.com for undergraduate courses and firstname.lastname@example.org for postgraduate courses.
Please email the Registry if you have any queries about the visa checkpoint.
