About the Proof of Concept Fund

The Proof of Concept Fund aims to support University of Leicester academics and staff by providing funds to drive projects with significant commercial potential Proof of Concept thumbnailtowards achieving key commercial milestones, eg:

- A licence agreement

- A joint development plant with an organisation

- A large grant application for translational funding to enable the next stage of commercial development.

The Proof of Concept Fund is run by the Division of Research and Enterprise: Enterprise and Business Development to provide academics and staff with the opportunity to improve the work undertaken by each College in support of the University Enterprise Strategy and the Enterprise Strategy of each College.

Eligibility

Any academic member of staff from across the University of Leicester, or any non-academic member of staff working alongside an academic to promote an entrepreneurial culture.

Please note awards will be subject to confirmation of the University’s  HEIF funding.

Criteria

Applicants should consider and show:

  • What the market opportunity/unmet need is
  • The technology solution to meet this opportunity/need
  • A draft costing for proposed expenditure
  • Which commercial milestone(s) the applicant is proposing to deliver at the end of the project
  • What the funding will deliver by the end of the project
  • It is important that funds are used for developing a defined commercialisation opportunity and not just continuation of general research funding.

Previous Project examples

Some examples include:

  • Scene of Crime App (Featured in Innovate UK Technology Showcase in Forensics 2015)
  • Commercial development of technology in treating tinnitus. (Currently in Phase 2 trials).
  • Molecularly Imprinted Polymer nanoparticle development (A spin-out company, MIP Diagnostics Ltd has since been launched from the University of Leicester).

Duration

It is expected that each project will be six months in duration and generally start in September.

Application process

  • Registration of interest (by email or telephone): 5 May 2017
  • Expression of interest form: 23 May 2017
  • Presentation to Assessment panel: 25 July 2017
  • Project start date: 1 September 2017 (estimated)

All Colleges strongly recommend that project ideas are discussed with respective College enterprise and impact leads before submitting any application.
