The University of Leicester’s principal lecture theatre has been named after its former Chancellor Sir Peter Williams who stepped down from the role last year.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Bob Burgess paid fulsome tribute to the dedication of Sir Peter on the occasion of the official opening of the Peter Williams Lecture Theatre in the Fielding Johnson Building South Wing.

He said it had been the University’s great good fortune that Sir Peter had taken on the role of Chancellor which he performed for five years. Leicester had ‘broken the mould’ in appointing Sir Peter as Chancellor- not only was he distinguished academically, but also in the world of business.

Expressing gratitude for the warmth of his reception, Sir Peter said: “What a warm feeling I have had returning here today with Jenny and, above all, I have memories that will never dim of being Chancellor.

“I never imagined coming back to a grand day such as this.  I have sat in this theatre, never ever dreaming that my name would be on a plaque here for generations to come. It is the first time it has ever happened and, I am quite sure, it will be the last time.

“As Chancellor I have received such warmth from you all, formed so many friendships and I have come across so many academic and student interests.  It has been a tremendous privilege.”

Sir Peter said he was greatly honoured to have his portrait by distinguished Leicestershire artist Bryan Organ placed in such a prominent position outside the lecture theatre: “It makes me feel rather small and insignificant,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as Chancellor, he recalled the occasion of the Royal opening of the David Wilson Library as being a particular highlight.

Sir Peter concluded: “The real memories that Jenny and I will take away are the warmth of your friendships for which we are very grateful.”

After the official opening, Sir Peter delivered a lecture: ‘Climate Change – Uncertainty and Our Future’.
