Statement from the University of Leicester

Before exhumation of remains at Grey Friars could commence, the University of Leicester required an exhumation licence from the Ministry of Justice.

As part of the process of applying for an exhumation licence, the University of Leicester specified in the Application where any remains would be reinterred – regardless of the identity of the individual.  The University of Leicester specified in its Application that reinterment would occur in Leicester Cathedral if the remains were proved to be those of King Richard III.

Following this, the Licence was granted.

The University has therefore now approached Leicester City Council and Leicester Cathedral who are in agreement that the remains of King Richard III will be reinterred in Leicester Cathedral.
