The HEliX 4-Strand Staff Survey: whole university
The 4-Strand survey is a more robust approach than Health Check and the Senior Management Survey as it seeks to validate the communications experience of staff rather that just management's perception of effectiveness. At this level of assessment, staff in a variety of occupations can be asked to complete a survey questionnaire. We recommend the survey be placed online to improve response rates (40% would be a very good response rate based on wider experiences) with printed copies for those without access to a networked computer and large format copies specifically for those who are visually impaired.
If the University does not wish to include all staff in the survey (because of the time burden) we recommend a stratified sample is created using our four category segmentation outlined below. We also recommend that the Vice-Chancellor circulates a printed memo and a follow-up email to all staff selected to take part, stressing the survey's importance and confidentiality.
There are four questionnaires you can administer - one for each segment of the staff population.
| Staff Group | |
|---|---|
| Senior Executive |
Includes Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Deans and the Registrar. All Board level staff, likely to be 6-10 but no prescriptive number is applied |
| Senior Managers |
Members of the wider university management team that includes heads of academic/administrative departments plus members of the management teams in the main departments. In a large University this may be more than 100, but no prescriptive number is applied |
| Management and Team Leaders | Have direct staff reports but manage a team not a department. The focus is likely to be more operational and less strategic. There are likely to be significant numbers and multiple of number of senior managers. |
| Staff |
The majority of those who work for the University. Those in this group have no staff management responsibility even though they may manage projects or budgets and be highly experienced academics or professionals. |
