Dr Lisa Smith - Senior Lecturer in Criminology

Lisa Smith

"As a world class research intensive university, there is plenty of support for academics engaged in research."

I grew up just outside Toronto, Canada, and I relocated to Leicester in 2006 to take up a post in the Forensic Psychology department and in 2011 I moved to the Department of Criminology.

I particularly enjoy working here because of the balance between research and teaching. As a world class research intensive university, there is plenty of support for academics engaged in research, both within departments and also centrally. The University offers great opportunities to academics in a wide range of disciplines. However, the University also prides itself on a high quality student experience, and the research-led teaching philosophy provides great opportunities for teaching and interaction with students at all levels. I think this balance is one of the best things about working at the University of Leicester.

On a personal level, I love to travel and the city of Leicester is a perfect, central location for exploring the UK as well as making it easy to access Europe and beyond.  Leicester itself is a great place to be based, as it is a vibrant, multicultural city with many great festivals and sights to enjoy throughout the year.
