The services listed here cover the various methods available for delivering teaching resources and support/equipment used during teaching.

Of note is the Blackboard VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) and the SPECTRE (Linux Service).

Service Description

Room Bookings & Timetabling

IT Services provide maintenance, support and development of the IT applications used to operate the business processes within the Academic and Research Services Division. At present the processes supported include Room Booking and Timetabling using the CMIS Timetabling System

Teaching Room Support

IT Services offer a comprehensive Audio Visual Service for teaching, research and events.

Video Conferencing

IT Services offer a video conferencing service throughout the world to venues which also have this facility. This system provides two-way vision and sound using either ISDN or IP communication.

Learning Technologies

IT Services provide maintenance and support of the Learning Technologies used by members of staff.

Blackboard VLE

IT Services provide maintenance, support and development of the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and other applications that are used within the Blackboard VLE system. At present the technologies supported include Turnitin and Learning Objects Blogs and Wikis.

Off-Air Recording

IT Services provide facilities to record television and radio broadcasts for non-commercial educational purposes without infringing copyright. The University holds a licence with the Educational Recording Agency (ERA) which allows recordings of broadcasts as teaching resources. (This does not include Open University programmes as these are covered by a separate licensing scheme).
Video & Audio Production IT Services offer a script-to-screen video production service. We also provide help with video and audio editing, duplication and format-conversion, either in-house or through recommended external suppliers.
Streaming Media Service IT Services Streaming Media Service provides an efficient method for delivering audio/video clips over the web or through the campus network. With streaming media, files can be viewed as soon as the data is fed from the streaming server, which gives a quicker access time.
Loan Equipment IT Services provide a comprehensive range of AV equipment which is available for loan from Learning and Teaching Room Support.
SPECTRE (Linux Service) IT Services provides staff and students with access to a server running the Linux operating system. This can be used for teaching or research purposes.
