Service Hosting
What we provide
IT Services can help researchers make better use of computing resources by providing system management expertise and by hosting server systems in properly equipped computer rooms. This should enable computer systems to operate more reliably and, through efficiencies of scale, make them cheaper to purchase and run. The service is primarily for computer systems running the Linux operating system.
What you can expect
Members of the Research Computing Service (RCS) team within IT Services all have a background in supporting research computing within academic departments. They can deliver and manage computing solutions which are dedicated to the needs of specific research projects. They will also seek to identify common computing requirements from different research projects to make efficiency savings by combining these requirements where it is practical to do so.
What we expect
Researchers are expected to describe the functionality they need from their computer systems rather than simply providing a list of hardware and software that needs to be managed. This allows researchers to focus on research and IT specialists to provide the computing solution which best suits their requirements.
Service availability
IT Services recognises that researchers will access their computing systems at any time of day from anywhere in the world. System level and user support will be provided during normal working hours, 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.
Service charges
It is expected that a contribution will be made to the hardware, software and staffing costs for this service. Charges will typically be negotiated separately for each research project being supported.
