Email Clients
Email clients available on ULTRA
There are a number of email clients installed on ULTRA and configured for use with the central CFS mail hubs.
A consequence of the centralisation of email is that if you wish to create filters for managing your email (for example to automatically direct mail from a particular correspondent into a specified folder), you should not use these clients for creating filters. Instead you should use Microsoft Outlook from a CFS desktop to create server rules for filtering your email. These filters will then be active on the mail server and will always work independently of the client you are using.
Alpine
Version installed: 2.00
Alpine is the latest development of the Pine mail client.
It is a terminal-based program so only requires shell access to ULTRA in order to be used. To start, type alpine or pine at the shell prompt. Alpine will start and will immediately prompt for your CFS password in order to connect to your CFS mailbox.
Three Collection Lists have been set up in Alpine:
- CFS Mail
This collection refers to your CFS email and any folders defined on the central mail hubs. This provides exactly the same view of your email that is seen from a CFS desktop Outlook client or from Outlook Web Access. - Local Folders
Any locally-saved messages will go into folders stored within the mail directory in your home directory. - News
Subscriptions to Usenet news groups through the JANET News Reader Service are collected here.
When sending mail, Alpine is configured to make a copy in the Sent Items folder in your CFS mail account. Postponed messages will be saved to the Drafts folder, and trashed items sent to the Deleted Items folder. These destinations have been chosen so that the same view of your email is always available from Outlook and Outlook Web Access.
For more information about Alpine's features, please read the man page.
Thunderbird
Version installed: 2.0.0.22
Thunderbird comes from the same stable as Firefox, and is a sophisticated graphical mail client. To start, just type thunderbird at the shell prompt.
On ULTRA, Thunderbird is configured for access to your CFS mail account. You will be prompted for your CFS password when Thunderbird starts.
