ULTRA: The Central Linux Service

An overview of the central Linux service

ULTRA is the University's central Linux service. It is a 16-core 64-bit computer with 32GB of memory. It provides an interactive Linux environment with general utility applications, programming languages, application development tools, internet tools, browsers and communication programs, graphical applications and specialised packages. It is open to all students, staff and researchers and is accessible on- and off-campus.

Please see the Getting Access page for details of obtaining access to the service.

Important Notice

On August 3 2009, the ULTRA service on falcon.le.ac.uk was replaced with a new system raptor.le.ac.uk.

In most cases users will not notice any change in the service and will not need to take any action to migrate files. Nevertheless the following important points should be noted:

  • The ULTRA service no longer maintains its own passwords. When logging in you should use your normal CFS password.
  • Your files from the old ULTRA service on falcon have been copied into the directory old-ultra in your home directory on raptor. No other steps will have been taken to migrate your old ULTRA environment so it is up to you to do this yourself - but if you need any assistance please contact the Service Desk.
  • Users who had their email delivered to the ULTRA service were moved over to CFS mail on August 3. But there is no restriction on using ULTRA as your preferred platform for email - see Email Clients on ULTRA for details of the email clients available.

We provide training for staff and researchers in basic Linux skills; please see the Introduction to Linux course details. Even if you are ineligible or unable to attend the course, you may find the tutorials useful.
