Available software
We provide "mandatory software" and "optional" software for users of the CFS Service. To check what is available see the Software Catalogues for CFS.
Mandatory software is available on all PCs at the University
Optional software is the additional software available for installation
The catalogue for "optional software" tells you where you can find the software and also indicates if it has any restrictions on use.
The software available is regularly reviewed by the Software Panel and there is a Standard List of Supported Software.
Access to software
Some software for CFS is made available using Microsoft's Application Virtualization (App-V) program, see About Server Virtualisation. Access to this software is granted via a users CFS account and it will be streamed to their computer on demand. It will also be available from any PC that the person is logged in to.
Not all software is made available this way and the different methods of locating and accessing software on a Student PC and a Staff PC are outlined below.
Student PCs are available in the PC Areas on campus
Staff PCs are those PCs in staff offices or departments

| To assist with accessibility issues there is a menu called "My Software" on Student PCs. This menu should be used if you have set a low screen resolution for the PC. It ensures that the list of software (the same as that in the "CFS Software" menu) can be viewed on the screen. |

| NOTE: If there is a Run Me First option double-click on it before you use the software. |

When all the software has been selected click on Done. On completion the selected software will be listed in the “CFS Software 2” menu. |

Removing access to software from a Staff PC
- Go to Start > All Programs > Install CFS Software to open the "Run Advertised Programs" window.
- Select the software you wish to remove.
- Click on Run
A dialogue box wil be displayed that asks you if you wish to proceed.
NOTE: If you are uninstalling software in an attempt to fix a technical problem you should contact the IT Service Desk for advice.
Launching software from "CFS Software 2"
What happens when you launch software from the "CFS Software 2" menu will depend on whether the software has already been used on the computer. If it has, the virtualized software will be cached on the computer and it will open immediately and be ready to use. If it is the first time however, a progress message similar to the one below is displayed in the System Tray whilst the software is streamed to the computer.

When completed the software will open and be ready to use. You may find some software slow to respond the first time you start to use it, or use a new function (such as launching Help). This is because only those parts of the software required are streamed to the computer. As you use more of the software it will be streamed to the computer and the slowness will decrease.
Removing access to software from "CFS Software 2"
- Go to Start > All Programs > CFS Software 2
- Choose the Select & Remove Software option
- Select the software to be removed
- Click on Remove followed by Done
NOTE: This does NOT uninstall software, it simply removes access to it.
