Mobile Device PIN Setup

Describes the process on how to add a PIN number to your mobile device prior to PIN numbers becoming mandatory.

Mobile Device Security PIN Instructions

There are different terms used to refer to device PINs depending on the manufacturer of your mobile device and its software. If it is a Windows Mobile device you will be setting a device PIN and NOT a SIM PIN. If you are using a Nokia you will be setting a Security Code and not a PIN. If you are using an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch you will be setting a Passcode.

Windows Mobile Devices

For Windows Mobile devices with touch screens follow these instructions:

  1. Click Start > Settings > Personal tab, and then click Lock.  If there is an existing device lock and you want to change it, enter the device lock password and then click Unlock.

All Nokia Phones (Symbian Operating System)

Nokia devices are slightly different to other devices as they require a 5 digit security code on the device.  Do not get this confused with a PIN as this is for the SIM card.  As there are many variations of Nokias software for its devices it is impossible to cover them all here but if you have bought a device within the last 18 months its likely to be what it’s called an S60 device.   They usually come with a default security code set to 12345 but it’s worth checking this in your user manual.  This code is not active so you will have to activate it and change it to something unique.  To do this follow the instructions below:

  1. Select Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Security > Phone and Sim Card
  2. Scroll down to Lock code and select Options > Change
  3. Enter the default number (whatever this is set to in your user manual but most likely 12345) and press OK
  4. Enter the new lock code press OK and confirm it again followed by OK.
  5. Scroll up to Phone autolock period and select Options > Change > User Defined > OK and enter a time for the phone to autolock after being idle between 5 and 60 minutes.   Press OK, enter your new lock code and press OK again.
  6. Click the main menu button or the red phone key to return to main menu depending on your device.
