Windows is the platform which allows you to run programs, access your files and print documents. You will be more familiar with Windows XP, which is currently installed on most University computers. The Windows 7 operating system has been available for some time now and has become popular amongst home users.
Also we will be upgrading to Office 2010. There are few differences between the current version (2007) and 2010 so you should not have many difficulties, but we will be providing a new IT Help website and Training Courses.

Windows 7 and Office 2010 for home use
There are some great offers that are available to staff, allowing you prepare for Windows 7 and Office 2010 at home. Staff can purchase Office 2010 and Windows 7 at heavily discounted prices for personal use. Unfortunately we cannot help to install these programs on your home computer so before purchasing any programs do check your computer meets the minimum system requirements specified.
What will the upgrade involve?
We will be gradually upgrading computers across the University by removing Windows XP and installing the new Windows 7 operating system on your PC. This will bring you the opportunity to ‘spring clean’ your computer to remove unnecessary files and programs which may be slowing it down. Most of your files should be moved across automatically and your username, password and emails will not be affected.
As part of the project we will be increasing your personal Z: drive quota to 10Gb from 550Mb so it should be possible to handle all of your files. However we will also be withdrawing the D: drive – except where you can make good case for needing it. The rationale for this is one of security as anyone using your computer can read the D: drive and there is much greater vulnerability of losing your work on this drive.
