About your email address

Your email account will have a standard email address in the format

Staff and student email is provided in different ways:

Email storage

Your email account will have a fixed quota for the messages and other items you store in it:

  • Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate students are allocated 25 GB of storage space
  • Staff and Research Postgraduate students are allocated 5 GB of storage space plus up to 15 GB Outlook Online Archive storage space

If you are using all or nearly all of your storage quota you will receive email to inform you of this. If you exceed your quota you will be unable to send any further email messages until you reduce the size of your mailbox.

Staff and Research Postgraduate students

If you believe you have done all you can to manage your email effectively and are still over your quota then you should contact the IT Service Desk to request an Outlook Online Archive.

If you use IMAP programs such as Mac Mail or Thunderbird you should contact the IT Service Desk to request more mailbox space.

Email Message Size

There is also a limit on the maximum size of email messages you can send – approximately 25 Mbytes. Most email messages are much smaller than this and only become large when attachments are included. Because of the way email messages are constructed, this means the maximum attachment size you are likely to be able to send is around 18Mbytes.
