Caller ID number to be shown for all outgoing calls

When you make a call to a number outside of the University using a University phone, the person you are calling will now be able to see your number. There is a way to hide your number as you make a call.

What

We are responding to requests from staff in recent years, asking to be able to send their number when they make an external call. Staff have found that their calls are not answered because the recipient has chosen not to answer calls if they can’t see who is calling.

Previously this was not possible. As part of the new University phone system, we are pleased to announce that we can now offer this feature. From now on all outgoing calls will show the Caller ID number when you make a call to a number outside of the University. This was introduced on Friday 9 September 2016 at midday.

How do I prevent my number being shown when I make an external call?

We recognise that in some cases it may be necessary to hide your number when you make a call. Instead of dialling 9 to get an external line, use ** followed by the number you are dialling.

Example

If you were calling the number 01234 567… from a University phone:

For an outside line dial

Number to dial

Action

9

01234 567 …

Your Caller ID number will be sent, so the person you are calling will now be able to see your number

**

01234 567 …

Your Caller ID number will not be sent. Your number will be hidden from the person you are calling and they may see ‘Private number’ or a similar message
