New High Performance Computing Linux Service launched
IT Services are proud to announce the 6 June launch of the SPECTRE High Performance Computing (HPC) Service
The new state-of-the-art interactive service is targeted at:
- Academics who need a Linux environment for courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Researchers who need to undertake processing and data analysis tasks primarily in an interactive, rather than batch, environment.
Replacing ULTRA
The launch of SPECTRE makes the existing ULTRA service redundant. Nevertheless the two services will run in parallel until October 2011, to allow users to migrate to SPECTRE before the ULTRA service is shut down. At that time any data not migrated from ULTRA will be archived for a period of six months, but will not be quickly recoverable from this archive.
Resources Common across HPCs
SPECTRE shares a common software base and some storage with the ALICE High Performance Computing service making it both an ideal test platform for those who just want to try HPC and simple to use for those already familiar with ALICE.
Prepare for the New Service
The service is available now, to provide users with time to modify any existing teaching materials, migrate their data to the new service and to allow software to be installed. If you are a current ULTRA user you must take steps now to ensure that you can use the new service at the start of the next academic year.
It is no longer possible to request accounts on the ULTRA service.
As with ULTRA, the new service is available to all students, staff and researchers and is accessible both on- and off-campus.
