ITS helps Genetics turn 35 hours into 35 minutes
IT Services dedicated Research Computing team has recently used its expertise to help researchers in the Genetics department.

A research group in Genetics utilises data fed from a genome sequencer which determines the genome DNA sequences. Until recently, Genetics were processing this data on a couple of local PCs and this took well over a day. The occasional need to do several processing runs on the same data, with each run being done one after another, lengthened the processing time even further.
IT Services Research Computing Team worked with the researchers to move the processing software to the ALICE High Performance Computer system. This not only made the processing quicker through the computing power of ALICE, but now they can process multiple sets of data at the same time. All this capability has reduced the processing time by a factor of 60, so work that took 35 hours now takes 35 minutes, and the Genetics team are no longer waiting for data processing to complete and can process more data than ever before.
