Windows XP update that will affect you

IT Services need to install an update to Windows XP, called Service Pack 3, onto all staff PCs.

What is happening?

From time-to-time IT services need to update Windows on all Staff CFS PC, mostly due to Microsoft releasing fixes to bugs and security flaws.

The update we now need to apply (Windows XP Service Pack 3) is large, and because it takes approximately an hour to install, we are offering staff the option to install the update at their convenience to avoid this being mandated at possibly a less convenient time.

This is an update to Windows XP - not a new version of Windows. Once the update is applied you probably won't notice any difference in the way Windows operates. It will just be more secure and free of bugs.

Who is affected?

All staff who use CFS PCs.

What do I need to do?

If you want to install the update at a time of your choosing over the next few weeks, then you can do this manually. The update installation will take approximately an hour

  • Close all programs that you are using
  • Choose Start>All Programs
  • Choose "Install CFS Software"
  • In the window that appears, Choose "Windows XP SP3 - Install"
  • Click on the Run button

Your PC will restart during the installation.

If you do nothing, the update will be applied when it is 'mandated' to your PC by IT Services. For details of when this will happen, see the schedule below.

When

The optional installation will be available from 18 January 2010.

Installation of the update will be mandated on all staff PCs according to the following schedule. Remember that installing the update yourself, perhaps at the end of the working day, will help to ensure that any disruption it causes is kept to a minimum.
