The teams in Infrastructure Services

Data and Voice Network Services

The data and voice network is a key part of the IT infrastructure at the University. It enables students and staff to efficiently and effectively communicate, access, and share information. The Data & Voice Network Services (DVNS) Team are responsible for this network.  This includes network design, maintenance, security and optimisation of the entire network infrastructure, as well as support and development of network services such as IP telephony, Domain Name Services, e-Mail Transport and Internet Protocol (IP).

Database Management Services

Database Management Services are responsible for the infrastructure supporting the key University business systems; SITS Student Records, SAP ERP (Providing Finance, Human Resources, Estates and Research Management services), Business Objects and PAMS Accommodation system.

The team provides SQL server and Oracle database management as well as systems management of the business applications themselves. We also provide database support for many departmental databases hosted on the SQL Server cluster.

Research Computing Services

This newly established team provides support to researchers across the University. The main focus of this is establishing a new High Performance Computing (HPC) facility, scheduled for launch in 2010. The updated Ultra service is managed by this team. Support for hosting and managing unix/linux systems used for research is being provided by this team. This can be, for example, systems for CPU intensive work such as simulations or data processing or for storing results or output from instruments.

Systems Services

The Systems Services team is responsible for the design, management, configuration and security of the University’s Windows server and storage infrastructure and many of the services that this infrastructure underpins. This includes the MS Exchange email service, the Active Directory authentication service, the Storage Area Network, the provision of staff and student file storage (X:drives and Z:drives), networked and charged printing services, backup and recovery services, design and delivery of a managed desktop service (CFS) for Open Access (student) and Private (staff) PCs, the systems which centralise management of the 4500 client PCs, the delivery of more than 100 software applications to these desktops, and the hosting and management of many critical windows based business applications.
