NX

NX is a protocol for UNIX variants which allows access to a remote desktop.

It is similar to X11, but has a number of performance enhancements which makes the remote desktop much more responsive.  You can use NX to access ALICE on- or off- campus.

About NX

  • NX uses the secure shell (SSH) protocol, so all traffic between the client and server is securely encrypted
  • Access to ALICE with NX is permitted from anywhere, even from off-campus.
  • NX sessions cannot be suspended
  • If you close the NX session window your session will end and all applications running within the session will be killed. You will be asked for confirmation before the window is closed
  • You can only run one NX session at a time

University Windows 7 PCs

  1. Install NX Client from the Program Installer
  2. Choose All Programs > NX Client from the Start menu and choose ALICE from the list
  3. Log in with your University IT account username and password

    NX login window
  4. You will see the remote ALICE desktop in its own window on your desktop

Other computers

If you are not using a University Windows 7 PC, you need to download the NX client from the NoMachine website. Make sure you download version 3.5 of the NX client, not version 4.

You cannot use NX from Mac OS X Lion, as version 3.5 will not work on Lion, and version 4 will not allow you to connect to ALICE.

  1. Copy the NX configuration file ALICE.nxs from the /usr/local/alice directory on ALICE to your computer. Alternatively you can download it from these links:
  2. Double-click on the NX configuration file to start the NX client
  3. Log in with your University IT account username and password
  4. You will see the remote ALICE desktop in its own window on your desktop
