7-zip is a program for compressing and uncompressing files using zip and other file formats.

More information

7-Zip supplements the built-in Windows 7 file compression by allowing you to compress multiple files into a single file, password protect compressed files and use other compression formats. Compressing several files into a single file can be particularly useful if you needed to send several files in an email. It can handle a variety of file formats including 7Z, ZIP, RAR and TAR. It also offers AES 256 encryption capabilities.

Notes:

Compressing Word documents and other Microsoft Office files makes very little difference to file size. Zip files can be opened by most computers.
