Access the shared departmental X: drive off-campus

Files on your shared departmental X: drive can be accessed off-campus on your home PC via the WebAccess folder.

Setup department X: drive access

  • Contact your Departmental IT Contact to see if your department has a WebAccess folder or to create one for you
  • Any files you want to access off-campus will need to be in your department’s X: drive WebAccess folder
  • Most departments do not allow students to access files on the X: drive

Access using a web browser

1. Open your internet browser

2. Type https://xdrive.le.ac.uk into the address bar

3. Login with your University IT account. Enter uol\ before your University IT account username

4. Navigate to your department’s web access folder

5. Click on the file you want to work on

6. Save the file to your computer

7. You can then open the file and work on it from home

You cannot upload files back to the folder once you have finished working on the file. To save files back to the X: drive you will need to map the x: drive to your home PC.

Setup your home PC to connect to the X: drive

You can setup your home PC to permanently connect to the X: drive allowing you to open and save files. Follow these steps to map the network drive:

Windows XP

1. Click Start > My Computer

2. Choose Tools > Map Network Drive…

3. Select Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server

4. Click Next

5. Click Next

6. Type https://xdrive.le.ac.uk

7. Click Next

8. Login with your University IT account. Enter uol\ before your University IT account username

9. Click OK, then click Next and then click Finish

10. A window opens showing the X: drive

Windows Vista/7

1. Click Start > Computer

2. Click on Map Network Drive

3. Select Connect to a web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures

4. Click Next

5. Select Choose custom network location and click Next

6. Under internet or network access type: https://xdrive.le.ac.uk and click Next

7. Login with your University IT account. Enter uol\ before your University IT account username

8. Click Next, then Finish

Working on files

You will need to open and save any files you want to work on to your computer.

Once you have finished working on a file you can upload it back to the X: drive by copying and pasting back to the WebAccess folder.

Access using a network drive

You will need to setup your home PC to connect to the X: drive before you can access the network drive

XP

1. Click Start > My Network Places

2. Double click on xdrive.le.ac.uk

3. Login with your University IT account. Enter uol\ before your username

4. Click OK to open the X: drive

5. Locate and double click on your department’s WebAccess folder

Vista/Windows 7

1. Choose Start > Computer

2. Double click on xdrive.le.ac.uk
