Options for paying your tuition fees
Students are responsible for ensuring that their tuition fees are paid by the dues dates set by the University.
The options available for payment of tuition fees are:
1 Deferred payment
(available to Undergraduate Home/EU students only)
If you wish to defer payment of your tuition fees until after you have completed your study, you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Finance (England). For further information and an application form go to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance .
If you are eligible for a tuition fee loan Student Finance England will then pay the fee direct to the University. You will only repay the loan after you have finished studying and are earning over £15,000 if you commenced your studies prior to 2012 or earning over £21,000 if you commenced your studies in 2012.
Once your eligibility for a Tuition Fee Loan has been assessed you should receive a financial notification from the Student Loan Company. If you have not received a financial notification you should contact the University’s Student Welfare Service at welfare@le.ac.uk .
Note: If you choose not to take out the tuition fee loan or only apply for a proportion of your fees to be paid by a tuition fee loan you will be required to pay your contribution before you can register, as described in 2 below.
2 Payment at time of study
If you choose to pay your tuition fees at the time of study you can either:
- pay your tuition fees in full, prior to the start of your academic year; or
- pay in two instalments, with the first instalment payable prior to the start of your academic year and the second instalment due towards the beginning of the next term. Exact dates will be confirmed in your fee statement which will be emailed to your University account during your first term.
In order to register for your course and have access to University facilities it is a requirement that at least the first instalment of 50% of the total annual fee must have been paid. The exact due date for the second instalment will be confirmed in your tuition fee statement. This will be emailed to your University email account during the first term. If the second instalment is not paid by the due date, this could lead to the suspension of your registration.
Once you have made your payment there will be a short delay while the payment is processed before you can complete the online registration process
- For payments made using the University’s e-pay online payments facility – Allow 48 hours from the time of making the payment.
- For payments by Bank Transfer – Allow 5 working days from the date of sending the payment.
- For payments by Cheque –Allow 5 working days from the date you anticipate that the University receives the cheque.
Sponsored Students
Students are ultimately responsible for ensuring tuition fees are paid on time. However, where you have arranged for your tuition fees to be paid, either in full or in part, by a sponsor, the University will invoice the sponsor directly on your behalf.
If a sponsor is paying your tuition fees, before you can complete the online registration process, you must provide the Cashier’s Office with a completed Sponsorship Details Form and a confirmation letter from your sponsor confirming the proportion of the tuition fees that they will pay. This letter must also include your full name, nine-digit University of Leicester student number and your sponsor’s full invoicing address. Where a sponsor only pays a proportion of the tuition fee you are required to ensure that the balance of the tuition fees is paid by the due date.
Once you have provided the Cashier’s Office with these documents please allow 48 hours for processing before you attempt to complete the online registration process.
The University will invoice your sponsoring body directly. If, for any reason, a sponsoring body fails to pay the full amount due by the requested date, you will become liable for payment and will be contacted to arrange payment of the outstanding balance.
Please note that the University is not able to recognise private individuals, such as relatives, as formal sponsors with whom it can deal directly.
A Sponsorship Details Form, in pdf format can be downloaded here.
Departmental Scholarships
If you have a departmental scholarship and you are having difficulties completing the online registration process you should contact the University Cashier’s Office at cashiers@le.ac.uk.
Early Payment Discount
Whilst the University allows payment of tuition fees to be spread across two equal instalments, the University’s preference is for full payment of annual tuition fees to be made in advance of the start of the academic year as this reduces the administrative burden associated with tuition fee collection. As such, where the annual tuition fee is paid in full, prior to completion of the online registration process, the University offers a £100 reduction in the annual tuition fee for full-time, self-funding, students whose annual tuition fees are £5,000 or more.
Please note that this discount is not applicable where a student is sponsored by a University recognised body.
If you choose to pay your fees in full prior to registration, you should deduct £100 from your total fee before you make your payment. Please note that if your payment is declined or returned then this will result in removal of the discount and the full fee will become due.
Career Development Loans (CDL)
For advice on applying for a Career Development Loan please see http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/gradschool/finance/funding/other/pcdl
If you have taken out a Career Development Loan to fund your studies you must send a copy of your loan approval notification, including your CDL reference number and a copy of their payment schedule, to the University Cashier’s Office at cashiers@le.ac.uk. This will enable us to identify the payment made on your behalf when it is received into the University's bank account.
If your Career Development Loan is only for a proportion of your tuition fees you will be required to pay the balance. Normal payment arrangements will apply, including the requirement that you must pay at least the first instalment before you are able to register.

If your ELCAS funding is only for a proportion of your tuition fees you will be required to pay the balance. Normal payment arrangements will apply, including the requirement that you must pay at least the first instalment before you are able to register.
