Cardboard
Cardboard can be left with the recycling for the waste assistants to collect and take to the various cardboard containers around the campus.
Cardboard must be flattened prior to being left for collection.
Cardboard must not be left for any length of time in an area where it could become a fire hazard.
Clinical Waste
University regulations for the disposal of clinical waste can be found in University Waste Disposal Guidelines. The contract for the disposal of this type of waste is managed by the Estates Office. The contract is run by SRCL.
Collection from the yellow bins at the Adrian, Maurice Shock Medical Sciences Building and the Robert Kilpatrick Clinical Sciences Building take place on a Wednesday morning. Keys for the bins and padlocks are available from the Porters desk in each building. Any queries should be directed to the Waste Officer (x 1434).
More detailed procedures can be found here.
Confidential waste
Please read through all the information below before completing a collection request or raising a query about the confidential shredding service.
There is a scheduled confidential waste collection every 4 weeks.
If you wish to use the confidential shredding service, please fill in the online request form here. Please email the Waste Management Team if you require confidential waste sacks.
Paper and analogue/digital storage media can be disposed of using the confidential waste service. Please bag analogue/digital storage media separately to avoid contamination of the paper waste.
ShredPro staff will make contact with the departmental representatives on the day of collection. An authorisation signature is required for each collection. The Shredding Operatives will only service those departments that appear on their request log.
NB: A new form must be filled in for each collection.
Please refrain from contacting the waste officer on the day of collection unless strictly necessary. If there is a problem with the service, all members of staff who have logged a request will be contacted with any relevant information.
The deadline for submitting shredding requests is clearly stated in the table below. Late requests will be carried over to the next scheduled collection.

Charges for the scheduled service are £5.00 per bag. Please ensure that your department name is quoted to the operative shredding the materials. If you have an unusually large amount of shredding and wish to receive further advice, please contact Phil Ball (Waste Officer x1434).
Feminine Hygeine
This service is managed by the Estates Office. The current contractor is PHS Limited. The bins are emptied monthly utilising a discreet liner service, which means that the bins are not removed from the cubicles. The bins are sterilised on site. If you have any problems or issues with the service, please contact estates.
Furniture
Furniture must be broken down and the recyclable components put in the appropriate containers for collection.
Please contact Interior Solutions to arrange for collection and correct disposal.
General Waste
Waste is collected from the Academic campus by Wastecycle. Any problems should be raised in the first instance with the Porters. The University disposes of in excess of 2000 tonnes of general waste per annum. In a bid to reduce this amount, we are aiming to recycle more waste. Queries should be directed to the Waste Officer (x1434).
Hazardous Chemicals
This service is managed by the Department of Chemistry. This regular service is announced via memos. If you have any such waste to dispose of, simply complete the return form and send to Chemistry. Please ensure that you provide an appropriate telephone extension to allow the department to discuss the waste if necessary.
IT equipment
Please read through all the information below before completing a collection request or raising a query about the IT waste collection service.
The University currently works with Second Byte to recycle redundant IT equipment. They also provide a comprehensive data destruction service.
All our IT waste is refurbished where possible. When the items are beyond repair, they are stripped down to their components and recycled.
There is a scheduled IT waste collection every 2 weeks.
If you wish to use the IT waste collection service, please fill in the online request form here. This service is free of charge.
