Keep safe whilst walking
There have been a number of thefts around the University recently. Officers are carrying out high visibility patrols in the area to offer reassurance to members of the public, however there are a few simple steps people can take to minimise their chance of becoming a victim:
- Walk with friends rather than alone,
- Stick to lit routes in the dark
- Do not walk with your phone in your hand or have valuables on display.
Walking can burn off anything from about 150 calories an hour up to as many as 420 calories an hour, depending on whether it is on flat ground or up steep hills, and how fast the pace is.
Walking for 20 mins (approx. one mile) burns over 60 calories (equivalent to one Celebrations chocolate).
Experts recommend taking 10,000 steps a day – that’s nearly three miles! Active commuting helps you achieve this and saves on gym membership!
