The academic year is nearly over and all that is left for us to do is celebrate all of the achievements of our volunteers in 2012/13.

Summer BBQ celebration of all things volunteering

If you’ve only received the newsletters but want to be more involved next year or if you’ve spent all of your spare time with us—everyone is invited to celebrate the fantastic achievements of Environment Team volunteers in 2012/13!

Blackthorn Manor
When: 11th of June at 13:00—it’s after all of your exams and deadlines so is the perfect time to kick start your summer!
Where: Blackthorn Manor—to see all of the work that conservation volunteers have done this year
Transport: We’ll be putting on minibuses to take you from main campus to Blackthorn Manor which is near the Oadby student village
What are we doing: BBQ with local meat and fresh veggie options. Handing out special awards, hoodies and t-shirts and catching up on all the events of the year.

To book your place at the event (so we can make sure there is enough food for you) and to get a lift down to Blackthorn Manor email Kate at kja14@le.ac.uk to let her know you’d like to come.

IF youre still looking for voluntary opportunities or information on where to go to find a 'green' job then we've put webpage together of all the things we think you might be interested in including internships and further education opportunities at: www.le.ac.uk/environment/getinvolved/volunteers/currentopportunities/summer-term-volunteering

What can you look forward to next year?

Are you starting at the University of Leciester in September and what to meet new people and make like-minded friends?
Are you returning to the University and looking to improve your employability skills before you graduate?
We are already looking into the volunteering opportunities that you can look forward to next year. So far they include:

Volunteer coordinator roles

Work alongside the Environment Team Intern in their busy, vibrant office to help deliver the volunteering scheme. Roles this year included communications coordinator, events assistant and records keeper. The roles might change next year but you’ll still be gaining invaluable office experience as well as developing more job related specific skills!

Green Impact Auditing

Green Impact is a scheme run by the NUS to help universities, colleges and local businesses to become more sustainable organisations. Green Impact is looking for students to help them audit the Leicestershire County Council. Students signed up will gain full environmental audit training from an NUS representative and then will have the chance to apply those skills when they visit the County Council to audit their work. (No previous experience is required)

Conservation and allotment days

These are some of our most popular events and offer Environment Team volunteers the opportunity to spend some time outside in the fresh air and work at the University’s Blackthorn Manor or learn how to grow your own fruit and veg at the local Saffron Acres Allotment. These events will be running throughout the year, just look out for them advertised in the volunteering newsletters. (If you aren’t signed up to these then you can sign up at: www.le.ac.uk/environment/getinvolved/volunteers)

Leicester Award for Sustainability

This award allows you to gain full recognition for your efforts with the Environment Team and you will end up with your award printed onto your degree transcript when you graduate. The award not only gives you recognition for your volunteering but also gives you full and comprehensive training on sustainability and gives you an insight into what it would be like to work in the sector.
