Carbon and Energy Management

Carbon savings are one of the team's key objectives. Find out here, what we are doing to tackle energy issues at the University.

One of the primary objectives of the Environment Team is to reduce the carbon footprint of the University. The largest carbon contribution the University makes is from the energy used to heat, cool and power the buildings at the main campus site.

By introducing energy efficiency schemes either through better housekeeping (e.g. switching more equipment off more regularly) or through improving the efficiency of building fabrics or equipment used then carbon and monetary savings can be made. The utilities bill for the University topped £3 million by 2005 and targets to reduce this are prime objectives for the Environment Team. With increases in utility costs expected once the recession lessens its influence there are even greater incentives to try and save more energy.

Our greatest achievement so far has been the award of £1 million Revolving Green Fund in 2009 (majority funded through Salix Finance) which we have already totally committed or spent. We are now able to start reinvesting the savings so if you have ideas of energy-efficiency projects in your buildings then contact Chrispal Anand to discuss them further.
