Race

The realisation that there was a need to proactively address race equality in this country marked the beginning of a new way to tackle inequality and discrimination generally.

The racist murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 and the struggle mounted by his parents to discover why the investigation into his murder had been so flawed and tainted with racism led to the publication of the famous MacPherson report.  The full report of the Stephen Lawrence inquiry can be found here

The introduction of a Public Race Equality Duty followed, the first time that equality legislation required a proactive approach (now contained within a wider public equality duty under the Equality Act 2010).

Much progress has been made since then and the University of Leicester has a diverse population of staff and students working within a diverse City.  It is not complacent however and recognises that there is still much to achieve.  How will we do this?
