We are pleased to make available two articles from the Autumn 2016 issue of The Use of English.

This issue begins with some responses to a living poet who has featured prominently on GCSE and A Level syllabuses - Gillian Clarke. Clarke's willingness to discuss her work is the impetus behind her own contribution to this issue which she has generously allowed us to upload here - a reconsideration of of one of her best-known, most-studied poems, 'Cold Knap Lake'.

Sarah-Jane Bentley's article - The Voice of Wales: Gillian Clarke and the Anglo-Welsh Poetic Tradition - plots illuminating connections with R.S. Thomas and Dafydd ap Gwilym (c.1320-1370) among others.
