Course aims 

Girl writingSpeaking:

  • Develop speaking skills in an academic context (e.g. discussion, debate)
  • Introduce and practise oral presentation skills
  • Practise conversation strategies

Writing:

  • Investigate paragraph structure
  • Investigate the structure of a variety of formal text types (e.g. narrative, argument)
  • Identify and practise elements of formal written style (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, idiom)
  • Receive extensive individual feedback on performance in these areas

Who are these courses for?

  • EL1001 (Semester 1 & 2) and EL1002 (Semester 2 only) are for students with an advanced level of English.
  • EL1003 (Semester 1 & 2) and EL1004 (Semester 2 only) are for students with an upper-intermediate level of English.
  • Students sit a placement test before the start of the course. Groups will be decided on the basis of this test, and on students' other timetable commitments.

  • Written homework tasks (essays, summaries, paraphrase tasks etc.)
  • Group oral presentation
  • Group discussion task
  • End of course oral and written exams
