Advanced Smoke Group working with Innovation Partnerships

Leicester Business develops innovation partnerships with University of Leicester

“Danish arrived with the right academic credentials and a willingness to think laterally about our problem,” says Richard.  “He has helped us develop a patentable product which is set to open up new export markets for us; it has been an amazing collaboration, which is continuing”

Oadby-based Advanced Smoke Group is reaping the benefits of collaboration with the University of Leicester and the Innovation Partnership project. The company has already seen major improvements to its business practices and future prospects. Part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the project is  designed to help companies achieve cost savings, as well as long-term commercial benefits and growth by collaborating on environmental sustainability innovation projects.

Richard Brooks, General Manager of Advanced Smoke Group needed to find a way to monitor and control air leakage through tall buildings in order to reduce the volume of smoke created by fires. The company asked the University for assistance which arrived in the form of full time a post graduate electronics engineer, Danish Ahmad, who not only designed the device they needed, but also redeveloped Smoke Zone Panels to improve overall performance, extend battery life and reduce product costs.

Anjuu Trevedi, Innovation Partnerships Director at the University of Leicester added:

“it is really exciting to see local companies using the research from the University, developing new products and even exporting for the first time. Real bottom-line benefits include increased company knowledge, a wider product range and associated skills, cost savings through resource efficiency, development of new markets and greater profit margins. Being the Director of this project is very rewarding and satisfying because I have seen what can be achieved by working together.”

The Innovation Partnerships project is inviting applications from East Midlands SMEs interested in tackling resource environmental efficiency challenges including waste reduction, recycling and energy use.  Anyone interested should contact Anjuu Trevedi, Innovation Partnerships Director on 0116 252 3354 or anjuu.trevedi@le.ac.uk
