Terms and conditions
Terms and conditions for interns
Documentation
All interns MUST bring original documents to prove their right to work in the UK. This is a legal requirement and interns will not be able to commence on the internship without it. Any visas are the responsibility of the intern and must be applied for in good time to ensure appropriate cover for the duration of the internship.
It is also a requirement of the programme that interns are recent graduates of the University of Leicester. We will, therefore, need to see evidence to support this.
Interns will either need to produce a recent P45 form or complete a P46 form for tax purposes. This needs to be completed before payroll process your first payment or you may be subject to 'emergency tax'.
Intern status
Interns are members of staff in the University. You will participate in Departmental events, can book on Staff Development courses (subject to availability) and will have a direct line manager in your department.
Hours
The programme is full-time so interns are expected to be engaged in project work and other activities every weekday (9-5pm). Some flexibility may be possible but check this with your direct supervisor.
There may be occasions where interns are required to participate in events outside the normal working hours. Interns should be able to take the time back through the TOIL (Time Off in Lieu) system.
Holiday
Holiday entitlement will be pro rata to 24 days for full-time working throughout the year (ie 12 days over 6-months). Holiday entitlement must be taken within the period of the contract by agreement with the department. In addition to this interns will also get Bank Holidays and University Closure days as standard. Interns should ask their manager about how to book leave.
Salary and finances
Interns will be paid monthly through the payroll system and will pay tax and national insurance as required. Net pay will depend on your tax status and previous earnings during the tax year; anticipated net pay is approximately £1000/month. Payment will be made directly into your bank account on the last working day of the month.
Accommodation
Finding accommodation is the responsibility of the intern. The Students' Union (SULETS), Accommodation Office or the Welfare Service may be able to help. There are many commercial organisations dealing with residential letting in the local area.
