Identify the best time for you to use planning

There is more than one way of using plans in essay writing. An essay plan can be used before or after the writing of the first draft, and your preference will depend on how you approach the task of writing essays. Consider the descriptions below and select the approach that best fits your way of working.

  • Writer 1
I like to make plenty of notes before starting. I like to have a good idea of what I am going to write before I begin the first draft. I find it difficult to begin a draft if I am not clear on the direction my writing is going to take.
  • Writer 2
I tend to make fewer notes than most people and tend to want to start writing as soon as possible. Often I don't know what I want to say before I start to write, but I find that ideas occur once I have started. For me, most of my thinking is done through the process of writing.
  • Writer 3
I like to do plenty of notes before hand and probably have a general of idea of the essay content before I begin to write. Once I have started to write I find that new ideas occur to me so the content of my draft is often different to my original intentions.
