About the Role

Responsible to: Rhys Cowsill (G-STEP business manager) to provide supervision within the University of Leicester. The intern will report to Prof. Heiko Balzter as line manager.
Location: G-STEP offfices, Readson House, 96-98 Regent Road, Leicester
Duration & Contract Type: 3 month internship project with a strong possibility of a further 3 month extension.
Remunerations:  £1,000 per month inclusive

The main purpose of this internship is to assist Gaia Remote Sensing Ltd. in the process of preparing the publication “50 uses of GMES in the pan-European regions”. This publication will describe operational uses of Remote Sensing and Earth Observation for a range of applications with strong user relevance. The intern will have the role of coordinating responses from authors wishing to contribute to the publication; carrying out liaison with the sponsors of this project; and supporting all editorial tasks.

Main tasks involved:
1. Dealing with enquiries and correspondence with contributing authors to the “50 uses of GMES” publication
2. Advertising the call for abstracts for the publication to a wide audience
3. Collecting and logging submitted abstracts and supplementary information in a database
4. Assisting the editorial board in overseeing the abstract submission, abstract selection, full paper submission and the publication production process
5. Liaising with the proof reader and the corresponding authors
6. Undertaking any other tasks required to achieve a timely delivery of the publication

Skills, knowledge and experience required for the internship:

(E) Qualifications: Bachelors degree or higher
(E) IT skills: Very good skills in Microsoft Word
(E) Publishing / media skills: Producing high-quality word documents using standardised templates, ready for printing
(E) Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
(E) Attendance: Reliability, very good time management and good working relationships in teams
(E) General knowledge of remote sensing and its applications

This internship will allow the successful candidate to develop their skills and experience in a publishing project. The outcome from this project will be a booklet of which at least 2000 copies will be printed and distributed to key decision makers across Europe. Being acknowledged as a contributing editorial assistant in producing this publication will promote the graduate’s experience, and give an example of a successful outcome from their work that they can use to demonstrate professional experience. The graduate will also benefit from the networking in this project and be in contact with a large number of leading remote sensing applications specialists across Europe. Consolidating practical project management skills, editorial skills, and IT skills will be another set of benefits to the employability of the graduate.
