Finding out about vacancies
Vacancy sources - Where do I start my search?
Employers advertise their vacancies in a wide variety of ways; these include:
Employer directories
At the beginning of each academic year, we receive copies of employer directories (such as Prospects and GET - Directory of Graduate Employment and Training) which list large employers recruiting graduates. Collect a copy or browse through reference copies. You will also find this information on the Prospects website.
Job vacancy bulletins
Prospects Finalist contains vacancy information from employers and is published five times during the academic year. Collect a copy or view online.
Newspapers and Journals
Vacancies are advertised in many weekly, fortnightly or monthly newspapers and journals. We hold reference copies of some of these, for example:
- The Leicester Mercury
- The Financial Times
- The Times Higher Educational Supplement
- Press Guide
Newspapers tend to advertise jobs in different sectors on different days:

Campus presentations and recruitment programmes
Presentations
Many graduate recruiters give presentations on campus. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about a prospective employer and to find out what vacancies they have available. Details of careers presentations can be found on our events pages.
Recruitment fairs
Employers attending recruitment fairs often have current and future vacancies to fill. Follow the links here to find out about our Careers Fairs. We also promote information about other careers fairs and events around the country here.
Recruitment consultancies and agencies
Recruitment agencies are commercial organisations that act on behalf of employers with vacancies to fill. (follow the link here)
Unadvertised vacancies
It is important to note that not all vacancies are advertised and this is particularly true of some smaller employers, who may not have websites and who may not advertise in the more traditional ways. Consider networking as a means to discovering some of these vacancies.
Other Resources
Follow the links to find out about academic/research vacancies or about working abroad. There are many useful websites in the vacancy resources page.
