National Insurance Number

What is a National Insurance (NI) number?

If you are going to undertake any paid employment in the UK, you will need a National Insurance (NI) number. Every NI number is unique and made up of letters and numbers like this: AB 12 34 56 C

(Please note: this National Insurance number is just an example and should not be used as your own number.)

How do you apply for one?

You will need:

  • Telephone the local Benefits Agency to make an appointment (see contact details below).
  • Bring your employer's letter, passport, and other identification to the appointment.
  • Ask for a letter confirming you have applied for a NI number.
  • It can take up to 12 weeks to receive the number but you do not need to wait for the NI number to start working.

Telephone 0845 600 0643 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday to book an appointment or visit the Directgov website for further information.

You could also see an International Student Adviser in the Welfare Service (in the Student Union Building) for help with applying.
